Benedict would like most people to believe he has nothing to prove, but he tries very hard to prove it anyway. He wants desperately to be liked, cherished even, but can't help but see others as beneath him; spoiled as he is, he finds it difficult to understand perspectives that are much different from his own. In place of empathy is something like need, a desire to be seen and wanted, and which can cause him to mold his identity to be favored by the strongest personality in the room.
With that said, he has an eye for aesthetics and can be unexpectedly generous when he likes someone. He will bend over backwards to please a person whose opinion he values, and has a profound instinct for conscientiousness that he attempts to drown with every intoxicant available to him.
There's a sweet person in there somewhere, he's just had no reason to think so up until recently.

history

Born the crown prince and heir to the kingdom of Southsea, a balmy coastal realm in a fantasy setting, Benedict Quintus Artemaeus enjoyed an extremely privileged existence with very few struggles up until his early adulthood. In his world, magic exists but is highly illegal, and the average person who manifests it is put to death without trial; thus was Benedict's rude awakening when he found in his late teens that he conjures fire from his hands under enough emotional duress. He was immediately stripped of his title, albeit given a lenient sentence in the form of lifelong imprisonment rather than immediate execution.
He lasted a year or so in his family's dungeon before succumbing to an illness of the lungs, but the result of his death was his arrival in Neocepholas rather than the expected oblivion.

AVAILABILITY: I'm in PST and do most of my tagging on weekdays during the day. I have a small child so I'm generally unavailable on evenings and weekends, but can sneak tags in periodically when he's watching Ms Rachel (not often) or sleeping (never).

BACKTAGGING: Gladly, up to a point! If something is more than a month or so old and can't be resolved I may ask that we handwave it.

THREADJACKING: Completely fine most of the time, maybe just give a heads-up first.

TRIGGERS: Most things are ok as long as I have warning! I am particularly sensitive to violence/negligence/willful harm caused to children and animals but don't necessarily need to avoid it entirely as long as we can talk through the situation first.
Also putting this here just in case, but pregnancy symptoms can also be a trigger if I'm not careful with how I encounter it, and I'd prefer not to RP about pregnancy in any capacity.

KINKS: Benedict is a wombo-combo of massive ego and low self-esteem. He wants to be adored and pampered one minute, then beaten up and insulted the next, and these elements are both core to his sexual being.
To put it more plainly, kinks would include: submission, body worship, impact play, discipline, bathing, sexy outfits, and probably more that I can't think of but feel free to suggest.
He leans toward bottoming, but is known to top sometimes and will do so for the right person if they make him feel special enough (or make him mad enough).

I'm technically cool with IC noncon but only if we mega talk about it first and everyone gets what they want out of the scene. I genuinely think Benedict would be into Consensual Non-Consent if he learned what it is and knew how to navigate it, but that obviously is not a thing that's going to get sprung on anyone IC or OOC.

SENSITIVE TOPICS: Benedict likes to get intoxicated and regularly uses drugs, sometimes to the point of blackout. His addictions are more emotional than physical, but this is still a big part of his character and is likely to come up more than once. He also, as mentioned above, doesn't have a ton of self-respect and can get himself into Bad Situations that he may not even remember.
Basically, self-destruction is a big theme here and I can understand why that might not be everyone's cup of tea, but we don't have to go into any of that if you're uncomfortable with it.

History

Benedict has lived an extremely privileged life with parents who simultaneously almost never interacted with him and indulged his every whim. He was raised by a nanny, Michaela, the only human servant in their household, and maintains a good relationship with her, to the point where she may actually be the only person he likes. The majority of their servants are elvhen, with a sizable number of slaves to fulfill the household's unseen roles.
His parents, Calpurnia and Aurelias Artemaeus, are among the Minrathous elite, powerful magisters who contribute a great deal to the city-- and greater Tevinter's-- politics. In his young adulthood, Benedict's parents have made the decision to steer him from his path of hedonism into one of personal growth under the tutelage of Magister Atticus Vedici, of whom they've become aware as a circumspect and well-grounded member of the Venatori.

Benedict has been a willing enough apprentice, but was not told of his master's status in the Venatori, and has been of the impression they're traveling Thedas to broaden his horizons and research whatever boring thing Atticus is into.

Personality

The short version: a spoiled brat. The long version: a young man of dubious emotional maturity who has never had any reason to believe the universe doesn't revolve around him, who presumably, deep down, has some redeeming qualities apart from being exceptionally good-looking, but has yet to find them or see any reason they should be found.

Benedict loves luxury, things that are pretty, people scraping and bowing in awe of his glorious presence, being right, and having no responsibility or accountability for any of his actions. He hates anything that reminds him that poor people exist, including poor people themselves, and is probably the kind of person who would genuinely think the wealthy have it worse.
He's well-enough educated and likes to read, speaks Orlesian in addition to Tevene and the trade tongue, and actually does have a decent head for bargaining when he can manage to pull it out of his ass (rarely). In truth, if asked if he's good at anything, he would have a difficult time answering, but likely wouldn't suffer the asker much longer.

Arrogant, selfish, and childish, Benedict is easily aggravated when he finds himself in situations where he's not completely in control or the center of attention. The flipside of that coin is a giant well of insecurity, drawing from the fact that he hardly knows his parents and they don't seem to care for him beyond what he can bring to their family's legacy. Admitting weakness would be admitting that he doesn't know how to perform most basic tasks, interact with people as an equal, or demonstrate any kind of useful skill, all of which he understands, at least on a fundamental level, are necessary to existing in the world.
Before beginning his apprenticeship, he has never had a reason to rise above his identity as an entitled princeling, and the process is proving increasingly challenging. Having witnessed no hardship in his life, he is overly sensitive to pain, cruelty, and any form of ugliness, all of which he is finding in abundance in Kirkwall. How he'll manage to adapt to it is the question of the hour.

Tevinter: The best and brightest. Land of milk and honey and rightness. The Divine should be male.

Venatori: Actually not super well-aware of who they are and what they do beyond what he's done with Atticus. Leans toward sympathetic.

Southern Mages: Weird and wrong but maybe not the worst. Don't know their own power.

Templars: Pointless and offensive.

Elves: Serving class, not worth addressing.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: Really really ridiculously good-looking, has some capacity for research/reading/writing when he can be convinced to make the effort, charming enough when it's worth his while, reasonably talented in magic.

Weaknesses: Incredibly easily flustered, insecure, spoiled, refuses to do any physical labor (and wouldn't be too useful even if he didn't), intractable, doesn't care about dogs.

Inventory
